School Shut Down - COVID 19

Dear Netherby School Community.

As you may or may not know our Prime Minister made a very important announcement today. It is here for you to watch if you missed it.

https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/nzs-coronavirus-alert-system-rises-level-three-hit-four-in-48-hours-prepare-nation-go-into-self-isolation?auto=6143885071001

For us this means school is closed from now until further notice.

If you work in essential services and need your child at school on Tuesday then there will be staff on site. Your child will be cared for but only if you are working in essential services.

Teachers are preparing learning that will be accessible either on line or through a home learning pack. The learning packs may be dropped off in your letter box if your child was not at school today. Look out for this.

In terms of learning remember keep up the reading, playing games with family, teaching children how to bake, arts and crafts can be set at home and visit learning sites on line for your children to engage in. We are expected to be at home isolated for some time, so having activities for your children is obviously useful.

Keep visiting our Facebook and Webpage for information pertaining to school and learning opportunities.

I urge you to follow the Prime Minister's advice and adhere to the Level Four alert status and what that means so we can overcome this virus and get back to normal sooner rather than later. Our vigilance will make a difference and potentially could save lives.

Level 4 Means eliminate and it is likely the disease is not contained and there is sustained and intensive transmission and widespread outbreaks.

For us this means:
People instructed to stay at home
Educational facilities closed
Businesses closed except for essential services (e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics) and lifeline utilities
Rationing of supplies and requisitioning of facilities
Travel severely limited
Major reprioritisation of healthcare services.

In short stay home and away from people and follow the instructions to give everyone the chance to keep safe and well.

Be safe, be kind and be brave.

Tip For Parents

Give your child every opportunity to read to you daily. Ten minutes of reading five times a week = 50 minutes of reading time a week.

If you did this for a minimum of 35 weeks a year we have your child engaging in text for 29 hours extra every year! That 29 hours helps your child read better because they do more miles, are exposed to many words, and importantly are exposed to many ideas through the text.

It is a win - win for all concerned!
